Paragon Aeducan managed to quell internal strife among the dwarves and encourage them to band together and fight back the darkspawn, while Paragon Cairidin created the first stone golems to stand against their foes.

Because darkspawn dwell underground, the dwarves were the first to suffer in the early days of the blight. Their prosperity, peace and connectedness endured for millennia, but when the first darkspawn began to appear just prior to the First Blight, the roads between thaigs became unsafe to travel. As the Tevinter Imperium began to rise, their connections with the dwarves lent them strength and supplied their magisters with lyrium. When humans arrived in Thedas, the dwarves established relationships with them that fostered trade and commerce. In their early days, the wars they endured all but obliterated the Titans and pushed the dwarves even further underground. Overseeing a massive library of tomes and scrolls, what remains under Shaperate control in Orzammar is merely a fraction of the lore lost to darkspawn attacks and the destruction of the thaigs.Įlves and dwarves share a long history of violence and distrust. In dwarven culture, the Shaperate serves as a governing body in conjunction with the king, as well as an educational and lore system designed to preserve their history and culture. Dwarves believe themselves to be children of the Stone and speak of it in reverence, as though it lives and breathes as they do. Unlike Thedas' other races, dwarves know no connection to the Fade. They have no gods, but instead worship the Stone and pay deep homage to their ancestors. Surface dwarves shed their ties to Orzammar and live their lives in the world, and though many of them serve bring trade and commerce to Orzammar, their disconnection from the Stone has made them outcasts who often aren't permitted to return.ĭwarves also don't practice religion in the traditional sense like most Thedosians do. Casteless dwarves have little hope for their future and spend their lives as beggars or working for criminal organizations like the Carta. Dwarves have followed an intricate caste system for centuries, with each caste wearing a mark depicting its station. Individuals are born into their castes, determining the life they will lead and the opportunities open to them.
